As part of a partnership between the Université de Lorraine and the 8th International Journalism Symposium, a "Science & You" round-table will be held on Saturday, 18th October, from 9.30 to 12.30 at the Arsenal (Metz). The theme, "Popularising scientific information: what rules? What precautions?", will provide an opportunity to focus on the issues in science popularisation and the relationship between science, the media and the citizens of today and tomorrow.
Over the last few years, there have been visible changes in the scientific information ecosystem: open access to research publications, MOOCs, blogs and social networks specialised in science, etc. This massive and free access to scientific content raises many questions: validation of the information, mistakes in interpreting and popularising science, confidentiality, authorship and publication rights... The roles of the scientific community and the journalists have changed: how can we help the general public to find their way through it all? How do you choose among thousands of pieces of information? How can you evaluate the real quality of those who describe themselves as experts?
The role of each actor has evolved: researchers are more and more keen to communicate and the media are adapting to these new ways of consuming science. Especially in the scientific press, the general public can take part in current scientific debates, even contribute to some research as with the participatory science approach.
Researchers, journalists and experts in science popularisation and open access will take part in this debate:
- Gilles Dowek - director of research and director of the MoocLab (INRIA, National Institute in Research in Computer Science and Automation)
- Jean-Marc Galan - science communicator at the CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research)
- Célya Gruson-Daniel - co-funder of the association HackYourPhD and research engineer in charge of MOOCs at the Centre Virchow-Villermé
- Pierre-Sofiane Kadri - science journalist, MyScienceWork
- Joëlle Le Marec - director of the Master's degree in science journalism at the Université Paris Diderot, President of the Scientific Committee of Science & You
- Cécile Michaut - science journalist, PhD in chemistry and tutor in science popularisation. Author of "Vulgarisation : mode d'emploi" (Popularisation: instructions for use), publisher: EDP Sciences
- François Pacaud -responsible for enhanced editorial status for OpenEdition / Founder and Co-president of ShakePeers association
- Aline Richard - editor of La Recherche, French scientific magazine
The round-table will be introduced by Arnaud Mercier (Observatory of Webjournalism), and hosted by Nathalie Milion (the French radio station France Bleu).
